year 1

My freshman year started at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, meaning campus was a ghost town, and connecting with people was difficult. I also realized that the major I chose was not for me, adding insult to injury. These two separate battles are highlighted in the artifacts below.

My first social community in college came by way of a job at the campus gym. Slowly, my co-workers became my friends and my first day became three and a half years of employment. Working at the gym helped establish my confidence on campus and gave me a lifelong support system through the incredible friendships I made.

I spent a lot of early mornings and late nights working at the Wellness and Recreation Center. My artifact is a slideshow of when the gym was beautiful to me, alongside a picture of my team.

Second semester, I accidentally enrolled in a career development course rather than a history of feminism. Despite my mixup, this class became critical for ensuring myself that I made the right decision to switch my major from Engineering to Environmental Science. Dr. Marcy Bullock assigned us a podcast where we interviewed a professional whose career we admired, which is when I met Kinsie Rayburn. Kinsie's advice shaped the rest of my academic career, specifically convincing me to pursue GIS - which I developed an affinity for.
